2017 Nissan Patrol Y61 Legend Edition Review

Nissan Patrol Y61 Legend Edition Wagon

Price: $57,990 (m), $60,990 (a)

There’s still plenty of love around for the 20 year old Nissan Patrol Y61 workhorse that has remained on sale following the launch, a couple of years back, of the new Y62 Patrol in V8 petrol only.

The `old banger’ is tried and true and is now down to only 300 units in stock available in the Legend Edition. After that, it’s all over.

So get in quick if you want one of these full size, ridgey-didge fourbies that will take you across the Simpson if you want, tow boats up slippery ramps and capably perform rock hopping, mud plugging and stump jumping duties without complaint.

The Legend Edition is based on Patrol ST and runs a 3.0-litre, four cylinder turbo diesel engine and either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto transmission with proper selectable 4WD in low and high range as well as 2WD high. It has solid axles and coil springs too and is built on a ladder chassis like a truck.

It’ll tow up to 3200kg (leisurely in the manual, 700kg less for the auto) and benefits from ten grands worth of genuine Nissan accessories including a steel bull bar with Warn winch, tow bar, reverse camera, large roof rack, snorkel and a vinyl spare wheel cover.

Fuel consumption is OK at 10.9L/100km for the manual, 11.8 for the auto but it has dual tanks with 125 litres combined capacity.

LOVIN’

➔ Tough as a tank, will go just about anywhere

➔ Supple ride from all-coil spring suspension

➔ Roomy interior with seven seats

➔ Large luggage space

➔ Easy access through big doors, barn doors at the rear

➔ Impressive off road set-up and tyres

➔ Four wheel disc brakes

➔ Smattering of new technology including reverse camera and satnav

➔ Affordable compared to alternatives

➔ Reliability factor coupled with vast dealer network

➔ Still looks good on the road – big, strong, like a `fourbie’ should.

NOT SO MUCH

➔ Engine needs more power/torque

➔ Slow off the mark

➔ Tow capacity too little

➔ Pessimistic stability control activates too soon.
