Small car specialist Suzuki has just introduced a new generation, lighter Swift five door hatch, with competitive pricing and specification that should make buyers love Swift all over again.

Everything is new apart from the badge…new chassis, engines, body structure, styling, performance, technology.

MADE IN JAPAN

Better still is the fact it’s made in Japan which almost guarantees quality and reliability as opposed to vehicles from elsewhere.

They’ve rekindled Swift’s cuteness factor retaining a familiar look to its flanks but with a much better, driver oriented interior and more features including a handy centre tablet control screen that’s becoming common to nearly all Suzukis.

SHORTER, WIDER, LOWER

The 2017 Swift is up to 135kg lighter, shorter, wider and lower but with a longer wheelbase than before and follows Suzuki’s small, more efficient engine philosophy. That means a 1.2-litre four cylinder petrol in the three versions of GL and a 1.0-litre, turbo three cylinder in the range topping GLX.

Both engines are used in other Suzukis – Ignis and Baleno, as are the transmissions, a five speed manual and CVT in the GL and six speed conventional auto in the GLX.

DRIVER ASSIST

Some driver assist technology makes its way into new Swift, particularly up towards the top of the range models which feature adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and weaving alert.

All models get a reverse camera, cruise control, D-cut wheel and comprehensive trip computer.

It’s a hoot to drive in any spec’ thanks to the weight reduction and well calibrated dynamics. Great value too with the best option being the GL Navigator with safety pack at $19,190 drive away.
