Ram trucks are super popular in the ‘States, less so here because they cost so much after being imported, converted to right steer not forgetting the taxation take on the price.

It’s a big six metre long beast weighing in at 3.5 tonnes but one variant can tow as much as 7.0 tonnes with a tonne in the tray and six passengers. The all up gross vehicle mass (GVM) is well over 11.0 tonnes.

TOWING

It’s a must for towing a big boat or a big horse float.

The vehicle is imposing to look at like a scaled down prime mover but it has creature comforts fit for a luxury car including heated and ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel along with leather, premium audio, dual zone climate control and a comprehensive media hub with large format touch screen.

ROOMY CABIN

It’s a big step up into the roomy cabin but once there it’s happy days.

Plenty of power comes from the 6.7-litre Cummuns diesel engine rated at 276kW and 1084Nm but it likes a drink averaging 13.5 litres/100km unladen.

Still, there’s a 117litre tank between the heavy duty ladder chassis rails.

Though it’s a truck, Ram 2500 rides on coil spring suspension all round and has a comfortable ride for a commercial vehicle.

GENUINE 4X4

The drive system goes through a six speed auto to a genuine selectable 4×4, set up with 2H, 4H and 4L the first two are select-on-the-fly.

Optional integrated $3400 Ram Boxes (saddle bags) on the tray sides are handy for sporting kit or drink cans of which they can take 280.

Not much in the way of advanced driver assist features though apart from a  reverse camera and park assist. The 240 volt plug is really handy.

EASY TO DRIVE

On the road it’s easy to drive with light controls and excellent visibility. It cruises at high speed quietly and the overall ambience inside is luxury car.

Though not perfect, the conversion is done here at American Special Vehicles an offshoot of HSV and the Walkinshaw company. The foot operated handbrake is difficult to operate and the gear selector is millimetres from the driver’s door. Some other issues too in the media hub relating to driver and passenger positions.
